The Beluga, also known as the Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter), is a customized version of the A300-600 wide-body airliner designed specifically for transporting large aircraft parts and outsized cargo. While it was originally named the Super Transporter, it quickly became known as the Beluga due to its uncanny resemblance to the whale of the same name. In fact, the name was carried on by its successor, the BelugaXL, which began operation in early 2020.
The Beluga first took flight on September 13, 1994, and its development was motivated by Airbus’s desire to replace its Super Guppy aircraft for transporting its own manufactured parts. Presently, the company operates four or five Beluga planes that are mainly used to transport large assembled sections of aircraft fuselage and wings. In January of 1996, the Beluga finally made a public debut, and by 1998, the fourth Beluga was put into operation, allowing Airbus to offer oversized load transportation services to outside companies. Furthermore, by the year 2000, the fifth Beluga finally entered service.
The Beluga, is a unique aircraft that features two General Electric CF6-80C2 high-bypass turbofan engines, each of which has a power output of 262.4 kN, or 59,000 pounds of thrust. Moreover, it has a maximum speed of 780 km/h and has a service ceiling of 10,668 m. Altogether, the Beluga has a range of 2,778 km and possesses an empty weight of 86,500 kg. Generally, its maximum takeoff weight is 155,000 kg, and its maximum landing weight is 140,000 kg. In terms of construction, the Beluga has a wing span of 44.84 m and a wing area of 260.0 m². Meanwhile, the total length of its fuselage is 56.15 m with a height of 17.24 m.
One of the Beluga's most significant features is its ability to transport entire sections of other Airbus aircraft, including those of the A320, A330, and A350, in addition to engines and other oversized cargo. With a maximum payload capacity of 47 metric tons, it is among the largest cargo planes in the world.
Airbus currently operates five Beluga aircraft based out of their facilities in Toulouse, France and Hamburg, Germany. These planes transport aircraft components between Airbus's production sites, including locations throughout France, Germany, Spain, and the UK. For its designations, the Beluga has an ICAO code of A3ST, an IATA code of ABB, and an EASA TCDS of A.014.
In conclusion, the Airbus A300-600ST Beluga is a one-of-a-kind aircraft customized for transporting oversized cargo and entire sections of Airbus aircraft between its manufacturing facilities across Europe. No matter the constraint, when you require top-notch Beluga parts, rely on ASAP Logistics Solutions!
