The Airbus A310 is a wide-body aircraft developed and produced by Airbus Industries, a conglomerate of aerospace manufacturers that span across Europe. This aircraft was designed to meet the demand for a smaller, more compact version of the A300, which was the first twin-jet, wide-body aircraft in the aviation industry. Although they both share a similar eight-abreast cross-section, the A310 is 6.95 meters shorter than initial A300 variants and has a smaller wingspan that is reduced from 260 to 219 m^2.
The A310 features a two-crew glass cockpit, which later became an integral feature of the A300-600, allowing for a common type rating. Furthermore, the A310 is powered by General Electric CF6-80 or Pratt & Whitney JT9D turbofan jet engines, both of which provide reduced fuel burn, lower noise levels, and decreased CO2 emissions. It also has a seating capacity of 220 passengers in two classes or 240 in an all-economy configuration with a maximum range of up to 5,150 nautical miles. In addition, over wing exits are available between the two main front and rear door pairs.
One of the most notable advancements of the Airbus A310 is its use of composites in its commercial jetliner variations. For example, the A310’s vertical stabilizer is built with carbon-fiber materials, providing significant weight savings compared to conventional metallic structures. Composites are also used in the floor struts, panels, spoilers, and main landing gear doors of the A310.
In terms of economic advantages, the A310 is known for being the most profitable jetliner in its class. It offers lower operating costs and better overall economy compared to other airliners in the 200-seat category. More than that, since its entry into service in 1983, the A310 has provided operators the ability to operate on short-, medium-, and extended-range routes with a high degree of reliability.
