The Boeing 767 is a twin-aisle, twin-engine airliner that is widely used on transAtlantic routes. In fact, since its service entry with United Airlines in 1982, Boeing has delivered over 1,000 767s to more than 80 operators around the world, and with over nine million flight hours under its belt, the 767 has become a staple in the aviation industry. Notably, the Boeing 767 shares a few similarities with its smaller counterpart, the Boeing 757, including a common type rating and crew qualification. These similarities allow airlines to benefit from crew assignment flexibility and reduced operating logistics requirements. Furthermore, 767s and 757s also share similar flight crew operating instructions, maintenance schedules, manuals, and inspection routines, making them highly efficient for airlines operating both types.
Apart from commercial use, the 767 is also utilized as a platform for various military applications. For instance, the 767 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) is a perfect example of the versatility this aircraft has to offer. This particular system was designed for installation in this aircraft as response to the Japanese Defence Agency’s requirements for military operations. Similarly, the Italian Air Force and the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force ordered versions of the 767 that serve as military tanker transport aircraft known as the KC-767 and KC-46 aerial tankers, respectively.
The 767 is available in different variants with differing seating capacities and ranges. For example, the 767-200 with a length of 48.5 meters typically seats up to 216 passengers over a range of 3,900 nautical miles, while the 767-200ER only seats 181 passengers, but over a longer range of 6,590 nautical miles. Moreover, the 767-300 with a length of 54.9 meters typically seats 269 passengers over a range of 3,900 nautical miles, while the 767-300ER seats 218 passengers over a range of 5,980 nautical miles. The 767-300F, designed for freighter operations, has a payload capacity of 52.7 metric tons over a range of 3,225 nautical miles. Lastly, the 767-400ER with a length of 61.37 meters typically seats 245 passengers over a range of 5,625 nautical miles. It is worth noting that the 767 has military derivatives, including the E-767 for surveillance purposes.
