The Dash 8 was first introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984 and was subsequently acquired by Boeing in 1988, Bombardier in 1992, and Longview Aviation Capital in 2019 which brought back the De Havilland Canada brand. For its construction, the Dash 8 is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100s. More than that, it was developed from the Dash 7, meaning that it features improved cruise performance and lower operational costs, but it lacks short take off and landing (STOL) performance.
Serving as the second largest aircraft in the Bombardier Dash 8 series, the Dash 8 can carry up to 37 passengers per flight, has a cruising speed of 290 mph, and has a range of 900 statute miles. These characteristics coupled together make it a smaller and more cost-effective version of the larger Dash 8-300. There are several versions of the Dash 8, including the 37-39 passenger version that entered service in 1984, that of which is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW120A turboprops. This version was later upgraded to the PW121 turboprop which has a maximum cruising speed of 490-546 km/h, depending on the model.
On this series of aircraft, the initial rate of climb ranges from 1475 to 1560 ft/min, while the range with a full passenger load and filled fuel tanks and reserves ranges from 970 to 2040 nautical miles (nm), depending on the version. The Dash 8-100 in particular has a wingspan of 84 feet and 11 inches, is a length of 73 feet, and has a maximum weight of 34,500 lb. As such, it is also used as a systems testbed due to its smaller size compared to other members of the Dash 8 family.
The Dash 8 series provides a baseline for the DASH-8 family, and it has an obvious resemblance to its predecessor, the DASH-7, featuring a high-wing tee tail with a fin filet and a similar landing gear arrangement. However, there were many differences regarding appearance between both, most notably a shorter and more steeply sloped nose. In terms of their power supply, the Dash 8 uses a PW120A engine capable of 1,490 kW (2,000 SHP), driving four-bladed reversible propellers. Nonetheless, the more powerful PW121 engine capable of 1,600 kW (2,150 SHP) is also a feasible option. These turboprops are electrically started and drive four-bladed reversible Hamilton Standard props. Finally, an auxiliary power unit (APU) is an available option for some DASH-8 models.
