What is a Propeller Shaft?
For many automobile, marine, and aircraft engines, the propeller shaft is the component that transmits power between the gearbox and differential. Oftentimes, this component will be referred to by various names, common examples being a driveshaft, diving shaft, tail shaft, or Cardan shaft. Regardless of the name or setting, all propeller shafts perform the same role of torque and rotation transmission, making them a very important element of many vehicles and vessels. In this blog, we will discuss the propeller shaft in brief detail, allowing you to have a better understanding of its use.
Generally, propeller shafts are critical for
power transmission as many parts involved with power creation are placed too far from other components for a direct transfer. In order for the propeller shaft to function optimally, it must be rigorous enough to take on the forces of transmission resulting from torsion and shear stress. Generally, the load bearing of a propeller shaft is equal to the difference between the input torque and the load.
Whether a
propeller shaft is present within an automobile or an aircraft, many of the same basic components will be used. Generally, the common supportive components that the propeller shaft relies on include universal joints, splines, flanges, and bearings. The universal joints are what allow for the engine torque to be transferred to the rear axle of an automobile, performing a similar job for other vehicle types. Meanwhile, the splines are situated at the ends of the propeller shaft, and they allow for a variation between the driving and driven unit. Additionally, splines also serve the role of mitigating damage faced by bearing and assembly components. With the flange, the propeller shaft and gearbox joint are both supported, and the main bearing assists in supporting and guiding the shaft.
Depending on the design of the vehicle, there are a few common types of shafts, the most popular ones being single-piece shafts and two- or three-piece shafts. Single-piece shafts are best used for vehicles where there is only a small distance between the axles and the vehicle engine. To ensure that the assembly remains secure and strong, friction welding can be used for establishing the junction. When there is a greater distance between the engine and vehicle axles, a two- or three-piece propeller shaft will be needed. With these assemblies, the propeller shaft is broken up into two or three parts, ensuring that an optimal number of revolutions can be conducted to mitigate undesirable byproducts of operation like vibration.
As propeller shafts are moving assemblies that are put under a large amount of stress during typical processes, they must be well maintained on a regular basis to prevent an early breakdown. During your inspection, if you detect any cracks, galling, or other forms of damage, the assembly should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
